Who We Are
We are a group of ordinary men, women and young people who love and follow Jesus and want to express this in as many ways possible.
We believe that it is not so much that the Church of God has a mission but rather that the God of mission has a Church. By His Spirit, the Lord is already at work in our church, communities and amongst our families and friends. Our part is to listen to Him and follow His instruction, joining with His desire to see people made whole through Him.
Bethel Church was founded in 1937 after an evangelistic tent campaign toured the country, introducing people to Jesus. The church was formed with Mr Davies, the first Pastor, a few Elders, and some people who had trusted Jesus in the tent campaign. After initially meeting in different locations across the city, the church was given a piece of land in Spon End (the site of the current church) and soon afterwards a wooden church building was built.
The original Bethel church, meeting in a large tent.
The building stood in spite of a close encounter with a bomb in World War II and was expanded in the early 1980's with a brick-built church hall. In 2008, a fire broke out and destroyed the wooden church which meant after 71 years again Bethel had no permanent home for its Sunday morning gatherings. As a result, we began meeting in the Railway Club opposite the church in Spon End. The Railway Club became a permanent fixture in the life of Bethel for the next 9 years until 5th November 2017 when the first service was held in our new building.
Throughout all of the changes, challenges, and blessings over the years one thing which has always stood out above everything else is how gracious and generous our amazing God has been and continues to be!
